So does the Akira class not have any rear-facing torpedo launchers? The ship seemed to be designed with violent confrontation in mind, why wouldn't it have aft launchers. I understand Klingon ships not necessarily having aft weapons, due to their opinions on honor... but a Federation starship should...

This is just speculation but the effect would be cumulative. The longer your there the worst it will be for you when you leave. Maybe because their lives had been prolonged by the planet for so long that was their body catching up on the aging thus flooding them with bad stuff.
