In universe Starfleet are the best. We cant compare them to us only to those around them. Compared to all the other powers Starfleet repeatedly comes out on top.
Of course, I'm not disputing that, somehow, Starfleet is excelent in Trek.

What I am saying is that Stafleet runs its military in an idiotic way. (eg, hotel ships, putting civilians on warships, etc)
As for the Borg maybe they have never needed to send more than one Cube at a time in the past. They have only attacked twice using a tactic that has worked well for them in the past.
You don't use the same tactic twice in war if it fails the first time.

I disgaree. There was I believe heavy hull damage even before the Enterprise got there.

But if it worked the 1000 times before that you may want ot have another crack at it since it almost worked last time.

The British army thought the same thing about massed infantry charges in the first World War.

There was hull damage to the cube (and there was little evidence of Borg shielding during the battle, but that's another argument), but the Starfleet attack wasn't stopping it until Picard ordered fire concentrated on apparently unimportant system. It may have been that it was simply the concentrated fire that destroyed the cube, which begs the question of why nobody tried that before.

In Modern warfare they send cruise missiles in to soften up the enemy before attacking. Lets say one of these missiles doesnt destroy its target. or doesnt cause enough damage to stop it working. Should the Military stop using this tactic because of one bad expereince when its worked so well in the past? No try it a few more times if it doesnt work anymore stop... which the Borg have.

It has been shown in Voyager that when the Borg really want to assimilate a planet, they will send a large fleet to do so.

Put it this way;
If the army fires a missile and finds out the enemy has developed a device that stops a cruise missile getting through what happens? They will send more than one, or try to destroy said device by other, less expensive means

That may be because Borg cubes are more common there.

A decent example but not quite right. The Federation didnt design away to stop cubes they got a luck set of circumstances. Hardly grounds to change your strategy.

And its really that hard to spare a couple extra to attack the AQ?

My point was that if your enemy can stop one of your ships with heavy losses, do you wait a few years and send one again? No, you send at least two, preferably a dozen or so. They have the numbers and there's nothing stopping them from using them.

Transwarp conduits can bring Borg cubes here very quickly. Heck, they can drop 'em right out on our doorstep...

Voth, Hirogen, and many other Delta races live right next to the borg but seem unworried about them.

i wondered about that -- maybe there are strategies to keep a low profile for your species, thus allowing escape from borg assimilation? (maybe the federation could let the borg assimilate jackass the movie and get them to lose interest in the hu-mans...)

Judging from the borg tactics I think they already assimilated it.
