Really liked the episode, though it seemed a little underwhelming for a series starter. Was not expecting the Oswin twist till the last moment.

I didn't see it either. I figured with Who tech, a replicator, for lack of a better term, was/is well within their abilities.

I figured something was iffy when she was able to hold off the Dalek attacks with a couple board of wood, nailed???, across the door.
I am not sure if I like the "gift" that she gave the Doctor though...

Moffat is really intent on this "Doctor Who?" thing. Is this some kind of callback to classic Doctor Who?

I figured out something was up the same way as the Doc, though I didn't quite expect that.
Yeah, I'm unsure how I feel about that too. It's possible that's one of the things that'll drag down the episode, along with the fact that
On the other hand, I'm glad to see that the NSD's are still around, though a little exposition may have been nice.

Yes, that is what I was referring to...
As for Daleks overall... I am more annoyed that they keep coming back, period. They have gone from being the uber-villain to being nearly a regular, every-other-episode villain.

Re: S33E1: Asylum of the Daleks
That's always been a problem with 'uber-villain's in general. You can't have them kill all the heroes unless you want to end the series forever. If you don't have them back then how, exactly are they uber, after all they've been defeated once and not dared to re-apear afterwards. If you do have them back then it's yet another defeat you have to explain away. It's not just Dr Who, the same problem happened for the Borg. It was also a potential problem with B5 but they just had them leave, "never to come back".Jim wrote:Yes, that is what I was referring to...

For me, ti's that they get wiped out at most ends. Say what you will about 'Victory of the Daleks', at least they got away at the end.

Re: S33E1: Asylum of the Daleks
Well, I finally got around to catching up on my DVR. Let's see...
Oswyn's "secret?" I had an inkling about 20 minutes in... I was sure about 40 minutes in. I wasn't sure about the form it ended up taking, but not really a surprising twist.
Oswyn's gift? Well, during his entire tenure as show-runner, Moffat has had a leaning towards having the Doctor examine in obvious terms his active part in the evil that he so often fights. Oswyn's gift is paradoxical in terms of the storytelling; on one hand, it's true Whovian irony that she - being who she turned out to be - was the one to impart that gift, and that she was able to do so because of the Daleks' plan for her. OTOH, it was at the same time a ham-handed writer's fiat to just write out one of the Doctor's long-running issues. The same thing applies in the Daleks' affectionate little pet-name for the Doctor.
I did like the references in the ICU, and I thought they served to reinforce the point about the self-fulfilling-prophecy bit about the Doctor's "war against evil." I also liked the bit about Demon's Run being the catalyst to I also almost cheered when Amy woke up on the surface and - for the first time I can recall - she called for Rory before calling for the Doctor.
Overall, I give it an "enjoyable," but certainly not a "great." I also plan on being disappointed in my hopes for Saturday to hear Samuel L. Jackson say "Get these motherf*$%ing dinosaurs off my motherf&@$ing spaceship!"

Forgot about this. Maybe they're Daleks related to Alan Scott?Jim wrote:I figured something was iffy when she was able to hold off the Dalek attacks with a couple board of wood, nailed???, across the door.
