It's pretty funny, especially fo people who've played online team-based shooters.

About the length and obscurity of that post.

obscure? OBSCURE?! That's Red vs. Blue I'm talking about. It is anything but obscure. It is quite possibly the most well known machinama series on the net. And if you think that's obscure then get out from under that rock.

OMG...how can you not have heard of it? It's a Machinama based in Halo multiplayer produced by Rooster teeth.

Red vs. Blue centers on the Red and Blue Teams, two groups of soldiers engaged in a civil war. Each team occupies a small base in a box canyon known as Blood Gulch. According to Simmons (Gustavo Sorola), one of the Red Team soldiers, each team's base exists only in response to the other team's base. Although both teams generally dislike each other and have standing orders to defeat their opponents and capture their flag, neither team's soldiers are usually motivated to fight each other- if they are otherwise, neither are efficient. Teammates have an array of eccentric personalities and often create more problems for each other than for their enemies. Rooster Teeth periodically releases self-referential public service announcements (PSAs) and holiday-themed videos, which are generally unrelated to the main storyline. In these videos, the members of both teams claim to be actors on the Red vs. Blue series itself, but maintain their Blood Gulch Chronicles personalities

Never been much of a fan of Halo, myself. They're alright games, but I don't see the hype about them.

Are you kidding? It's one of the top 5 multiplayer games out there. Besides, the series is funny even if you don't like Halo. It doesn't really have any connection other then an off hand comment about Master Chief blowing up the Covenant armada in the first episode. That was back when they were expecting The Blood Gulch chronicles to only be a ten-episodes on how a soldier(Donut) got stuck in lightish red(pink) armor.

But with all their jokes and subplots it ended up turning into a 100-episode phenomenon, that also has two mini-series and a new full length series starting this summer called Red vs. Blue Reconstruction. From what I gather from the first episode it's a bit more serious but does involve the Blood Gulch cast somewhat as we see the new main guy in Blood Gulch to visit people who have experiance with the Omega AI which has been causing trouble elsewhere in the galaxy.

Basically now is a good time to get into it, with the new series starting up and all

I'm vaguely aware that there's a computer game called Halo, but I know nothing about it other than that it's set on a Ringworld-style place.

I'm not big on multiplayer games, I buy games for the single-player campaigns. As I said; Halo didn't live up to the hype about it.

Ah...I see. Ya...I haven't heard great things about it's single player, although I think it was the first game with a ring-world battlefield in it, which makes the story somewhat original. Then the sequals turn the story into "Bad aliens trying to wipe out all life in the galaxy". Way overdone. But like I said, you don't need to play Halo or even like it to enjoy Red vs. Blue

Halo is a console game. Halo and Halo 2 are on Xbox while Halo 3 is on Xbox 360. You can get Halo for the computer, and Halo 2, but Halo 2 only works on Vista and it came out about the same time as Halo 3 on the console. That's pretty lame. And it's hard to do machinima on the cheap on the computer, especially with first-person shooters(like Halo) as you would need one computer for every character in a scene and one more as a 'camara man'. Luckily consoles allow up to four characters per console and in Halo multiplayer I think the most you can have on any map is 16 characters. So that's a maximum of twelve characters in any one scene and a camara man. That's probably more then enough for the average machinama.

The best part about Red vs. Blue is that you can probably replicate about 90% of the scenes without having to add any of your own effects which is kinda cool.
