Well, since they left from DS9 do we think the plan could have been to send them into the Gamma Quadrant?

Possible, but doubtful. Why would they diver the one ship on a mission to the GQ to pursue a handful of guerillas?

It was there, it was fast, and it was best equipped to handle the badlands?

shran wrote:I wouldn't think so. People tended to say Voyager was capable of navigating the badlands with relative ease, and it was implied to be state of the art. The ship was expeced to survive their initial first mission. So it could hardly have been a suicide mission.
then again, Starfleet Intelligence kicks in, resulting in moronic decisions nonetheless.
I assume it was a class quality, not ship-specific

Possibly. It's been eons since I saw "Caretaker," so I'm not sure if Voyager was fitted out specially for optimum Badland performance.

Only ship in the sector syndrome strikes again?

Mikey, IIRC, there was no mention of Voyager being specially outfitted for the Badlands.

I like to think that once Starfleet realized they'll have to deal with the badlands on a semi-regular basis, they went to their drawing boards to see how they could tweak upcoming ship classes to better withstand them. Of course, that would require foresight and intelligence on the part of Starfleet so I don't know how likely it is...

It was her maneuverability. She could dodge the tornado things (which were deadly as we see from the effects on the Galor).
No trees were killed in transmission of this message. However, some electrons were mildly inconvenienced.

I got the impression for some reason, Voyager was the second Intrepid class ship commissioned for some reason.

Well, that was random...

But we know at least that it wasn't the first Intrepid-class, as the first one would be the Intrepid.

Well, we've only ever seen Voyager herself, so we can probably assume that they're either low in numbers or simply deployed in far-flung parts of the UFP.
