To my understanding a verbal contract is legally binding in the US.

But then how are you going to prove that the contract existed at all? If I say "I'll give you a hundred dollars to jump off that bridge", and you do so, how are you going to sue me if I deny ever making such a deal? And what's to stop Average Joe coming along and saying that I made such a deal with him, even if I didn't?

But even if it were, that still brings us back to the fact that they said something that sounded like "Toyota". If she was too dumb to realise that she obviously wasn't going to be given a brand new car, then that's her own fault.

#2 - she didn't have to work for the contest specifically. The prize was to be awarded for performing exceptionally; presumably, she was getting her normal pay for doing the work at all.

Short version:
One night, a couple of teenage girls in some town in Texas (IIRC) decided to bake some cookies for their neighbours. They dropped the plates off at several homes. They reached one house and knocked on the door. No one answered. They knocked again, and when there was still no answer they left the plate of cookies on the doorstep with a note saying who it was from, and hoping the recipients would have good night.
Next day, the woman who owned the house called the girls' parents, claiming that them knocking on her door at night had caused her to have a heart attack (or something) and demanding the parents pay her medicals bills. The parents, in the interest of wanting things to just blow over, agreed to pay the bills, and asked to see the bill itself for confirmation of the amount. The woman refused to let them see it, and instead took them to court and sued them for several thousand dollars.
The idiot judge ruled in her favour.
