I've heard speculation, and even seen origianal artwork assuming that the Miranda class was also a refit class from the TOS. I always assumed she was a new design, being fielded to take over standard operations from the connies. Does anyone know the truth of this???

I gotta give props to the Miranda, for it is the predecessor of the Nebula, my favorite ship. It has classic lines and, although it may not ooze "powerful" like the Connies, it was a mistake to underestimate them. They had much the same firepower as the Connie, and because of their smaller target profile, they would be better suited to the role of combat than exploration. Kudos to the Miranda!

I would doubt that the Miranda has the same fire power as the Connie. I'm sure they share the same PT ability but I would expect the Connie to have more powerful phasers.

I agree. The Connie struck me as more of a battleship, while the Miranda was a cruiser.

I was thinking Battlecruiser or Heavy Cruiser (Connie) to the cruiser or light cruiser (Miranda). If anything, the Excelsior came out as the Battleship or her age.

I see the Connie falling out since the Excelsior was just that much better of a design. Bigger, faster, stronger and more advanced. Where the role of the Connie had been replaced the Miranda still made for a good patrol ship. Cheaper then the Excelsior but still tough and rough for the times. The Connie was a victim of growth in the UFP where the Miranda was just not important enough to be replaced anytime soon. But, the Miranda was however too important to have nothing filling that role.

The Miranda's more compact design would also mean less overall material stresses - a Miranda commissioned at the same time as a Connie could easily have a longer hull life.

Agreed, seems the Miranda was just right for what they built it for.

Can someone tell me what the point behind the GCS was again... :?

Just an interesting pic showing the Miranda evolving. From The Red Admiral at Trekmania.net

Nothing, really - just updated some components to coincide with the Connie refit, and added the rollbar.

I wouldnt call that a new make so much as Miranda 1.0 and 1.1. Slight changes but nothing major.

I meant structurally. Overall it's a great upgrade, because it follows the KISS principle.
