You own the N.A. coastland. You don't own the Gulf's. Do you think that can have an influence?

As I thought. So you can't use massive magnetic thingy to locate the Iranian's sub.

I think mining the Strait is still a massive danger, and it's not worth the risk.

Mining the Straight of Homuz would be tantamount to declaring war on the entire western world. Suddenly everyone and their brother who has a reason to not like what they're doing has a perfectly good excuse to blow the shit out of anything and everything they like all while claiming, "They started it."

Yup. But again, it's to be used mostly as a punitive measure against any aggression on Iran rather than offensive measure. (Except if Iran have a way of remotely detonating their mines a la Evil Genius).

So, the threat of mining the Strait is not really a viable wartime strategy, but a deterrent for war. It's their equivalent of the MAD, as they might wreack havoc on the world's economy if they are threatened. It's more a matter of possibiltiy and risk rather than strategic superiority.

Except that the Strait is a very narrow waterway. US minesweepers could potentially keep the Strait open by going to a convoy system of escorts with each group of tankers getting a mine sweeper and maybe another escort or two working their way through. Mining the Strait would create an immediate problem but its not insurmountable. One badly damaged or sunk tanker is about all you get. The initial disruption will be pretty significant but it can be sorted out. Really if the Iranians want to really threaten the strait the best way to do it is with something like this:

Truck mounted Exocet launcher.

But you don't need much more than 1 damaged tanker to wreak havoc on the world's economy. Just think what would be the new oil price after that. The insurance premium on tankers would skyrocket, making it almost prohibitive to transit oil there.

And you can't have the U.S. Navy be the personnal bodyguard of every tankers going in or out of the Gulf.. I think.

If the US decides that's what we want to do we sure as shit can. Now we could only safeguard those ships trading with the US. The thing is we can't force a foreign flagged vessel to transit the Strait but do you really think the companies that own them will let them just sit idle if someone like the US is offering to ride herd on them? It will wreck havoc on the world economy but in the end it will get Iran blown off the map. MAD only works if you can destroy the other person. In this case all the Iranians can really do is really, really, piss off the western world.

The loss of a single oil tanker is nothing to the world economy. The problem as you said after is the safety of the region itself.

Speculations and insurance premium will insure that the oil price will skyrocket. That will have a definitive impact.

Speculations of impact however don't crush economies. Insurance may rise for that region, that will not cause a global problem.

With a sustained spiked up of the Oil price, energy prices across the globe will soar. This will lead to a drop of the economical growth

So we can lose an entire oil platform and suffer no impact to cost yet you think a single tanker would ruin the world. You are a major drama queen.

A tanker that has been destroyed in the area where 40% of the world's oil transit. If it was damaged by a mine, there is no way to be 100% sure that they are all cleared, so the risk remains. So every single tanker going in or out of the Strait would have to pay massive insurance premium, because no oil company wants to be stuck with that kind of liability.

I think you underestimate the world's (and the market's) capacity to panick when it comes to energy supply.

Also, lay off the insult. You can argue your point without making derogative remarks.
