Re: Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
The battleship role is filled by our own DITL Paladin Class. Neither the Sov nor any beefed up GCS are going to hold a candle to the Paladin Class.

But the Paladin isn't canon.

This thread isn't canon. We're planning things that haven't happend yet. So its all just theory.

I know. I was just getting that out of the way before someone else said it. Cause it was bound to happen.

Re: Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
Fair enough.
The Battleship role would rest flat on the Paladin.
-No AQ/GQ faction out there has anything to match this ship.
The Battlecruiser role would be the Sov or (heavily upgraded) GCS.
-Tough and powerful ships. The GCS has some numbers and the Sov is proven tough dispite its youth.
The main line Heavy Cruiser of the fleet will be the (upgraded) Nebula.
-A ship with a massive amount of upgrades leave it able to challange most races battleships.
The Standard Cruiser role would be filled by a couple of ships.
-Akira - Long range missile ship. Perfect for cover fire over the heavy warships that will be up close in battle.
-Ambassador (refitted) - Perfect for use against small attack ships but big enough that they'd need numbers for a response.
-Prometheus - Fast and powerful. No clue what the range/reach of this ship is. But its still a fair choice.
The Light Cruiser role fits with the Excelsior.
-The Lakota upgrades show a tough and hard hitting ship. However I do worry about the age of these ships. I expect a lot of dock time for these ships to maintain them. Still, its a good ship.
The Destroyer role is left for the Defiant class.
-The tough little ship. Pound for pound is pricey but you can't beat here size and total cost.
There are a number of smaller ships left for scouting missions, border patrol, good will missions, VIP transport, training crews and cargo runs for the larger ships. Though most of these ships in my view should be retired and scrapped.

Not really helpful to the modern fleet.

Yes, but I thought it'd be a nice touch.

A holodeck works better IMO. You can have every ship ever built right there. Plus you don't have to worry about some moron wrecking the place.

But you do have to worry about someone accidentally disengaging the safety protocols and setting self destruct.

Sorry, gotta disagree. It's like Picard ion First Contact. Something tangible works better imho. Just park the thing in Spacedock, set up some exhibits and you've got history.

Nice that no one disagreed with my fleet over view.

Yeah, good overview. WOuld make sense for a modern Starfleet.
Re: Which ship could become the backbone of the Modern Starfleet
Except for not mentioning science ships (though it is rather obvious), I think that is a very good overview.
