The USS Enterprise is assigned the survey the planet Nibiru. Finding life on the planet threatened by an unstable volcano, Captain Kirk chooses to break the Prime Directive to stabilise the volcano and save the primitive species living on the planet. He is removed from command of the Enterprise and demoted when Commander Spock reports this to Starfleet. [2]

Admiral Pike is placed in command of the USS Enterprise. He convinces Admiral Marcus to allow the demoted James Kirk to serve as his executive officer. [2]

A terrorist bomb explodes in London. In the aftermath Starfleet headquarters is attacked by John Harrison, a Section 31 operative who is in fact Khan Noonien Singh. When Harrison subsequently escaped to the Klingon home world, Captain Kirk and the Enterprise are assigned to track him down and kill him. Kirk discovers that the events are part of a plot by Admiral Marcus to militarise Starfleet and instigate a war with the Klingon Empire. The plot is ultimately foiled. [2]

The USS Enterprise visits the newly completed Starbase Yorktown for resupply. Whilst there an alien arrives, reporting that her crew is stranded on a nearby planet after their ship crashed. The Enterprise takes her there, only to be ambushed by forces under the control of Krall. The Enterprise is destroyed. [4]

Krall attacks Starbase Yorktown, almost succeeding in destroying it. The base is saved by the intervention of Captain Kirk and the Enterprise officers, and Krall is killed. [4]

Captain Kirk is assigned as the commanding officer of the new USS Enterprise, NCC-1701-A. He resumes his deep space exploration mission. [4]

Romulus is destroyed in s supernova explosion, despite the efforts of Ambassador Spock to prevent it. The Romulan Nero, enraged by what he views as Spock's betrayal, attempts to destroy Spock's ship. As a result both Nero and Spock are thrown into the past, creating an alternate timeline. [8]
