Alternate timeline [1] |
In 2375 the crew of the USS Voyager developed a variant of the slipstream drive which would allow them to complete their journey home in a matter of minutes. Technical problems with the system required the Delta Flyer to proceed ahead of the ship and relay sensor data to it in order to allow it to successfully navigate the slipstream.
Unfortunately, during the flight Ensign Kim relayed incorrect data to the ship which caused it to break out of the slipstream in an uncontrolled manner. Voyager crash-landed on a nearby planet, smashing itself apart and killing the entire crew.
The Flyer managed to survive the slipstream and make it back to the alpha quadrant. Ensign Kim tried to convince Starfleet to find and recover the Starship, but after some years of searching they decided to give up on the search. Distraught, Kim and Chakotay stole the Delta Flyer a Borg temporal transmitter. They planned to recover the EMH and have him extract Seven of Nine's cranial interplexing beacon and use their stolen device to send a transmission back through time in order to relay the correct sensor information to Voyager and so avoid the crash and allow the ship to reach home. Starfleet sent the USS Challenger, a Galaxy class starship under the command of Captain La Forge, to intercept the Flyer.
Initially all went well. They recovered the EMH and Seven of Nine and Kim managed to transmit the data to Voyager. Unfortunately, Kim was once again unsuccessful in avoiding the crash. With the Challenger closing in, the EMH suggested sending sensor data which would cancel out the slipstream entirely, saving the ship but ensuring that their attempt to reach home would fail.
Although the Challenger destroyed the Delta Flyer moments after they transmitted the message, this attempt succeeded and Voyager was thrown out of the slipstream safely. An alternate timeline was created in which the Flyer never reached the alpha quadrant and Voyager continued on its way home by more conventional means. [1]
