However, it quickly becomes clear that this ion drive can do something that nothing NASA is working on can; it can propel the ship at FTL speeds. When Kirk and the crew wake up after being incapacitated they follow the Eymorg ship's ion trail for 15 hours 20 minutes at warp 6. That's a distance of 3,312 light hours using the speed = warp factor3 commonly accepted for TOS. A ship travelling just under light speed would have taken 138 days to cross this distance.
So either the Eymorg ship travelled significantly faster than light, or Kirk and crew lay on the deck unconscious for over four months. The latter is virtually impossible - without food or water, its almost impossible for a Human to survive more than 18 days.
An ion drive capable of propelling a ship at FTL speeds would certainly account for the Enterprise crew's astonishment at the technology. How the ion drive accomplishes its task is something we could only speculate at, but on the Eymorg planet Scotty says he is detecting enough energy to knock a planet clear out of orbit. Clearly either the ship or base has a pretty impressive generating capacity!
We don't know for sure that there was only one person aboard the ship, but the teacher device only seems to accommodate one person and the time scale involved would seem to preclude using it on large numbers before they set out on a trip. So unless there are other teacher devices - which there may well be - a single person crew seems most likely.
