Notes

Designed to be a smaller and less capable counterpart to the Constitution class, the USS Miranda entered service one year before its larger cousin. There was a very high degree of commonality between the two classes, with the nacelles and most of the primary hull being almost identical.

The smaller size of these ships was largely accounted for by a lower level of habitability for the crew and a reduction in the number of science labs from fourteen to ten. Even so the Miranda's were full Explorer type ships, fully capable of conducting long duration research missions. Their considerable armament also made them an important addition to the defence of the Federation.

The Miranda class USS Bombay served in the Taurus Reach under the command of Captain Gannon in 2265, based on Starbase 47 (Vanguard). During that year the ship took on a mission to Ravanar IV to provide a vital replacement part to the colony there. The ship was attacked by six Tholian vessels and destroyed with all hands, though thanks to skillful and aggressive action by her Captain, the Tholians lost four of their six ships in the engagement. [1]

Comments

Of course, the Miranda is probably the most often-used class in the whole of Trek - whatever Paramount paid to have this ship designed, they certainly got their money's worth! Even so, we actually know remarkably little about these ships. The specs I've created are intended to reflect a ship that was originally a light cruiser to complement the heavy cruiser Constitutions, but has gradually become relegated to a variety of roles as newer designs take over. In combat the Miranda seems to act in support of the modern ships, as when two Mirandas ran interference for the Defiant during "Sacrifice of Angels". Mirandas seem to suffer heavily in combat, which is understandable, but there always seem to be more around. That's why I suggested such a big production run in the first place. With the appearance of the First Contact designs and the move to more CGI in Trek, I suspect we're going to see less and less Mirandas over the next few years. But then again, who knows...
