Nyota Uhura was a human female. She was born and grew up in a village near Lake Simbi Nyaimain in Kenya, Africa on Earth. Her parents were teachers at the University of Nairobi. She originally intended to study at the university but gave up that ambition when her parents and elder brother died in a shuttle accident, as the campus now held too many bad memories for her. She went to live with her grandmother, who was a Starfleet officer during her youth. [2]

A skilled musician and singer, [3] She was also something of a linguist having learned 37 languages by 2259. These included Andorian; Vulcan and Swahili, her first language; together with 21 other languages native to Kenya. [2]

Not sure what to do with her life she followed her grandmother into Starfleet and [2] entered the academy in 2257 [4] and chose communications as it seemed the closest match for her skills, and she excelled in this position. [2] As a final year cadet she served on the USS Enterprise and continued to serve there following graduation. [2]

In 2261 the Enterprise was called to assist a pre-warp civilisation by repairing a nuclear generator the Vulcans had given them before the foundation of the Federation. In order to do this without violating the prime directive the away team had to turn themselves into Vulcans. Captain Pike, La'An, Uhura and Chapel all volunteered for the process. Work on the reactor took a mater of moments and they returned to the ship. Attempts to return them to human form failed, meaning that they were stuck as Vulcans until a solution could be found. As a Vulcan she talked her potential boy friend, Beto Ortegeas, into a mind meld to make him more compliant. They were able to change the four of them back to Human form. [5]

When Starfleet attempted to retire the USS Enterprise Uhura served as a transporter operator on Earth's Spacedock. When the Enterprise-A was commissioned she rejoined its crew once again. [6]

In 2288 she became Captain of the USS Leondegrance, a Lancelot class Starship, were she led a five year mission to the Small Magellanic Cloud from 2301 to 2305. She took part in over 100 first contact missions with the civilisations she met there. The ship became an academy training vessel in 2317, where Uhura contained as its captain until her retirement in 2236. [6]
