A science officer on the USS Equinox, Thompson was stranded in the Delta quadrant some time before Voyager was. The ship experienced considerable difficulties during his attempts to reach Earth, compounded by the fact that it was a small and relatively weak science vessel. The crew eventually resorted to murdering alien beings after he discovered that a substance in their bodies could boost the performance of warp drive. [2]

The crew fought a cat-and-mouse game with the USS Voyager for several days before eventually being defeated by Janeway. Thompson attempted to escape via a shuttle craft but was killed by the aliens before he reached it. [1]
