Luq was a Field Kalar whose job it was to break rocks and gather the ore found within them. In 2259 he took Pike, La'An and M'Benga under his wing and helped them get used to the customs and routines and the Field Kalar. [1]

As a Field Kalar he would loose his memories each night and he relied one tattoos on his arms and a totem pole in his tent to "remember" his name, job and other important history. Through the rightings Luq knew that he used to have a family and a son, but had lost them. Although he didn't know the circumstances of the loss. The pain of this loss was so great that he covered over the words on his arm that mentioned them, so that he would better forget them. [1]

When questioned about the guards he reviewed that they did not loose their memory each night and told them the roumour that they were stored within a special chest within the palace. [1]

After Luq had been in the Palace for a short period he started to remember his family and was grateful for the knowledge despite the returning grief. He agreed that all Field Kalar should have access to their pasts. [1]
