RONJA-Wireless Internet via Visible Light Link

Thought this was pretty cool. Bookmarked it a while ago and recently rediscovered it:
http://ronja.twibright.com/
It uses two high powered light sources as transmitter and receiver.
It has a range of about 1km and can get speeds equivalent to wired Ethernet at 10Mbps.
That's wayyyy better than my wifi !
Although the AP I connect to is on the other side of the next room behind a wall.
What's even cooler is that the device is totally open source, meaning anyone can build with it, tinker with it, etc.
Would be interesting to see what kind of speeds a laser could get, since this device can be interfered with by weather, though I'd think a laser would be affected too.
