As it stands right now you could give me a squad of half trained squids ( navy personal for those that don't know) and I could take the bridge of any SF ship in less than a minute, and if I had half way decent intell less than 30 seconds. SF has lost the warrior culture that every person in uniform should live up to
When it comes down to holding or taking a ship, there aren't many who I'd be willing to trust over the USCG.
At least, they are doing a better job than the Mexican Border Guards, no?

those guys on the border are massively under staffed, its like having the equivalent of 3 cops to cover all of Brooklyn. So cut them a little slack would ya?

Which is why I was having this smiley
Rather than these ones:
And they are doing a lousy job. Off course they have reasons, I ain't denying that. I am not saying it's their fault. I am just saying that, on an absolute term, the job isn't done properly.
Let's not be touchy on such topic, or we'll get moved to the political forum!

Fair point, and I apologize for getting testy. I'm just sick of ppl b*tching over the border and offering no ways to solve the problem.

Scrounge up all old/disused speakers in the US, rig them up along the border and play Barry Manilow on a loop. Sorted.
Next?

How about rounding up veterans from the Wars who are having financial problem, and give them a juicy job as Border Ranger and a plot of land near the border??
That might become interesting with the recent Cartel involvements south of the border...

To be honest, the best people for stopping problems on the Mexican border are Mexican/Americans. They get nasty about things and could care less about the law.

I'd go with cluster mines, but that isn't a bad idea either.

Here's my quick and dirty solution:
Step one, station National Guard units on the border for their 1 month a year deployments.
Step two, issue less than lethal ammo.
Step three, have the Air National Guard permanently doing over watch on the border.
Step four, issue orders to the ground troops to stop and investigate any person/vehicle in their area of operations, with permission to use force to detain subjects as needed.
Problem mitigated

Not bad. Much more passive than my approach.
Still, if we continue this conversation, I'm going to have to move parts of this thread, and I'm just not in the mood today.

Congratulations, you just firmly secured about 3% of the border. The other 97% is still wide open. Do you honestly realize just how long the border with Mexico is and how narrow a front a man in foxhole can control? Your idea successfully does several things though, wastes a shit load of money, wastes a month of time the National Guard could have spent training to fight a real war, and congratulations you've now got soldiers doing police work and that always ends well.

There's a reason you separate military and the police. One fights the enemies of the state, the other serves and protects the people. When the military becomes both, then the enemies of the state tend to become the people.*
But I guess some americans don't define those illegal alien as "people", so never mind.
I still like my idea. You give financial stimulis, you provide job and a goal to the veterans of the Wars who probably are having trouble coping with PTSD. And you leave such job outside of formal military hands, and into civil services, so there aren't any fear of militarise your country's administration.
And it's a good start toward having a government like in Starship Troopers
