David Eddings series

Is anyone else a fan of David Eddings? It's very rare that one author has as strong an impact on somebody's life as his work had on mine. He's penned the 5 part series the Belgeraid, and its 5 parts sequel the Mallorian as well as two stand alone prequil novels, Belgarath the Sorcerer and Polgara the Sorceress.

When I was 13 I wasn't much of a reader and as shallow as many people my own age were at that time. We went on a road trip and I knew that I would be bored out of my skull so my dad took me to the book store. I don't know WHAT drew me to his books but I bought the first five part series, and since then I was hooked.

Big fan of his work. I have the complete Belgeraid, Mallorian, and Belgarath and Polgara. I've also read though do not own the entire Elenium and Tamuli series. I also got through the first of the Dreamers books, though I haven't gotten any further; they're rather different in tone.

Silk and Ulath are two of my favorite characters in fiction.

The Dreamers REALLY disappointed me, honestly. Not what I'd come to expect from Eddings, but hey......he was entitled to do his own thing. I'm re-reading the Elenian right now, on The Saphire Rose. I was just struck my the fact that many of his character incarnations appear in both series.

Oh there is a ton of simualirties between not only characters, but genereal ideas between both series. Especially in matters of mortals defying and actually engaging gods in combat. The orb of aldur and the Bhelliom are practical twins of each other, especially in their roles.

I love the world building he put into both series. He really made an effort to create a world, from the gods down to the nations and the people.

Tells about how he created the map of the world from the Belgeraid, and then populated it with appropriate peoples, and who the individual races are based on. Some pretty interesting stuff. And I finally found the god Mara's animal totem He was the Bat God.

One of my favorite quote ever is from Eddings:

Mandorallin(sp?): "Princess, even I would have some difficulty fighting the entire massed legions of Tol'Nedra uphill..."

I loved that line. Do you think he was REALLY as good as he thought he was?
