Space Between Decks? (GCS)
I remember reading something in the TNG technical manual that said the decks rested on a blanket of air, and that there was space between them.
This gave me a fascinating/strange mental image of someone in a space suit floating between them for inspection/repairs or something.
But I forgot what page that was on and without reading the whole book I didn't find it last time I looked.
Maybe its not there??

The amount of extra space on that ship, it wouldnt suprise me.
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Probably access crawlways like the Jeffries Tubes.

Yeah, those definitely exist. But space suits? There's no reasons for such access crawlways to be unpressurized.

No no, I'm not talking about about jefferies or crawlways here.
I mean complete VOIDS between the decks. The technical manual said something about the decks riding on a cushion of air, and I just thought it was kind of creepy that there was all that space there.

Depends probably on the pressure but your "cushion of air" might be just a few milimetres thick altough why you would build it that way I have no idea.
To be honest I don't remember reading about it but it's been awhile.

I may be dense, but I'm not sure what purpose such a space, other than maintenance access, would serve.

Me neither, I'm just saying I thought I remembered the TNG tech manual mentioning it.Mikey wrote:I may be dense, but I'm not sure what purpose such a space, other than maintenance access, would serve.

Well it would make sense if all decks were completely selfsustaining, floating in the hull and ready to be pulled out and replaced with other prefabricated decks instantly changing and adapting the deckplan.
But since this is obviously not the case, I have no idea what the point would be.

Perhaps it's akin to the shock mounting system in use in command bunkers and subs, except we use massive springs.

I was going to suggest this as well. If it was just a few mm thick, it might provide some aid for the inertial dampeners or something.Cpl Kendall wrote:Perhaps it's akin to the shock mounting system in use in command bunkers and subs, except we use massive springs.

Seems like it would raise havoc with the SIF...

Well we don't really know anything about them, just that they somehow reinforce the hull.steamrunner wrote:Seems like it would raise havoc with the SIF...

I remember reading that book pretty thoroughly, but I don't remember anything about that. Anybody still have a copy?
