Who else noticed that the date of the movie's release was May 8th?

Which just happens to be, according to the Star Charts, the day in 2161 that the Federation charter was signed.

I find that quite fitting.

I... prefer to look on the more idealistic side, there.

But I think MM&I's thought would be more correct, but it may be Trek writers doing something right, except the release date was the 7^th but it was announced as the 8^th. It may be a very subtle thing done by the writers that only a Trekkie would notice, if so, Kudos to them.
