I was watching Samaritan Snare on Sci-Fi (ScyFy now? Yay syphilis network) and there was an exchange I hadn't noticed before. Troi warns Riker to be careful, the Pakleds were not what they seemed. Riker replies, "Why? They're not the Klingons or Harrada." I could be mistaken and he mentioned some other, known race but I'd swear it was Harrada, or close to it. It piqued my interest because apparently Riker believes this race to be threatening on the level of the Klingons but as far as I can recall or find the race being mentioned anywhere else.

Does anyone recall this race or if I'm just hearing it wrong during the episode?

Well I got the spelling wrong, Jarada. The J is pronounced as an H. The Jarada are the species Picard was practicing his greeting for in "The Big Goodbye." Interesting. It just piqued my interest because Riker seemed to take them seriously but we'd never heard of them before. I'm always on the lookout for those kind of little details to work into a story.

According to the MA article, they apparently featured in some novels.

Yeah, I'm very bad with the novels, I've barely read maybe twenty Trek books across all the different series.

Again the difference between Kirk and Picard

Picard: "Allow me to learn your species proper greeting so as I don't offend you. Never mind that your species is offending mine"

Kirk: "I'm James Kirk, Captain of the Starship Enterprise. We come in peace."
Uhura: "No response, Captain. They seem to be offended that your not addressing them in they're own language."
Kirk: "Mr. Chekov, ready a full spread of photon torpedoes. Let's see if they speak our language."

I would change the last line to something like this:

Kirk: "Beam me down to the bedroom of a politically-important female. We'll see if they speak MY language."

And ya know what, he'd probably have gotten results anyways.

"Probably?" Please. If Kirk slept with Kruschev, there would have been total disarmament in Cuba.

I'd point out they're an insectoid race but I doubt that'd slow Kirk down at all.
