Episode Discussion: SG1 1.02 "The Enemy Within"

Post by Varthikes »

Stargate: SG-1
"The Enemy Within"

The highlight of this episode for me is Teal'c's development. I like that he's not immediately made a member of the team, let alone a trusted person. Realistic that way. And, I love how his expression changes dramatically during his interview with Colonel Kennedy when he learns that he has allied himself with the fabled Tauri. You get the first glimpse of Teal'c's goal of freeing the Jaffa from the Goa'uld.

One of my favorite scenes of this episode is where Dr. Warner is trying to search for an anesthetic for the Gou'ald symbiote, using Teal'c's "Junior" as a test. When they find a potential anesthetic, Warner tells Teal'c to cross his fingers. And, you can see Teal'c, unfamiliar with the expression, act confused for a moment before literally crossing his fingers.

Honestly, Stargate in general has very few of what I would call "bad" episodes. Certainly nothing approaching the awfulness of "Threshold".

Indeed. I can't off the top of my head remember an episode I didn't like. Even Stargate's worst is far above any other series' worst. I think the fact that it doesn't take itself 100% seriously and makes jokes and references to other series ("We can't call it the Enterprise, Sir") helps.

Yeah, Farscape did the same thing, which is why I love that show so much.

I honestly can't think of a Stargate episode I disliked, either. Huh. Though, I haven't seen many of them since they first aired, and I missed seasons 5-7 entirely, so...

Why do they keep naming Earth ships after greek stuff? Who wants to serve on a ship named after greek tragedies?

What would you prefer they name them after? Corporate sponsors?

" What about the Pepsi?"

" She's still in the Microsoft Galaxy."

They're hardly tradgedies. They're heroes.
Prometheus was a Titan who gave fire to humans by stealing it from the gods.
Daedalus was a great craftsman.
Korolev was a famous Soviet spacecraft engineer (his actual last name was slightly different in Russian, but that's just a variation on it).
Phoenix is named after the mythical bird.
Apollo was the Greek sun god.
And Odyssey is clearly a reference to Homer's famous poem The Odyssey about the Greek King Odysseus who thought up the whole wooden horse trick.

Prometheus was punished by being chained up, and having a bird come and eat his liver which grew back every night
Daedalus' son died when he tried to fly too high
Odyssey is a refernce to is an ancient story about the Greek warrior Odysseus who was lost for a great many years returning from the Trojan War.
Apollo was also seen as a god who could bring ill-health and deadly plague as well as one who had the ability to cure.

Something suggests that the guys naming these ships aren't too fond of the idea of space travel

Stargate even occasionally makes jokes on itself, most notably in the 100th and 200th episodes. What other series does that? Granted, there are times in Star Trek where characters make fun of the Starfleet uniforms. But, that's about it for ST.

Yeah, let's focus on all the bad bits.
You know, you can find downsides to any name. We have three mythical heroes and a great and cunning king, along with a famous rocket engineer and a mythical bird. That's obviously what they were named after.

Exactly my point MM&I. Why can't these ships be named something cool, like after a famous combat vessel

But didn't most of them sink?

Your logic can be applied to any name you could possibly come up with. Better to name them after well known mythical figures. And besides, they're often sent out on exploration missions. Naming them after warships isn't a great idea in that case.
