Real Metal = Anthrax, NOT Warrant or Winger.

Anthrax were top, especially that track they did with Public Enemy, was mind-numbing at the time

Depends. I'd need an example. There's over a dozen different genres of metal, nevermind hybrids and fusion genres, so depends what you mean. Generally yes it would be metal if they did what you said, but usually doom metal or gore metal.

Yes it is (annoying that is). Metal is Black Sabbath, Ozzy, Iron Maiden, Manowar, Led Zepplin (very early metal) Deep Purple, BOC, Scorpions, Judas Priest and I'll even be genrous and throw in Guns N Roses and Metallica.

I don't know what they call metal made after the 1980's. I call it shite. If I want to hear growling I can fire up some Klingon scenes on youtube.

Slipknot, Mudvayne and Killswitch Engage are all modern metal; it's quite well done, and not all screaming or growling.
