Mirror Universe--Alternate Timeline?
Mirror Universe--Alternate Timeline?
WARNING: Contains Time Travel theory, proceed with caution.
So here's the thought that occurred to me recently. What if the Mirror Universe that we all know and love, is just an alternate timeline?
Suppose, for a moment, that when the Borg went back in time in First Contact they created not just the alternate timeline created in ENT Regeneration, but the entire "Regular" Universe.
Suppose that if Riker and co hadn't met Cochrane and told him about the Vulcans, and everything that will happen because of them, he simply shot them, thus creating the Mirror Universe.
For this to work, we assume that the Borg were stopped before they made it back in time.
What do you think?

Re: Mirror Universe--Alternate Timeline?
It fits with the ideas of time travel that Rochey (supported by me and a few others) have put forth, that ALL time travel is in effect creatinga branch-line reality.
But why would the Borg have to be prevented from going back? That would seem to actually disallow any of the "alternates."

Personally, I've always thought the "Mirror" universe was closer to what we'd see in reality, so...Mikey wrote:It fits with the ideas of time travel that Rochey (supported by me and a few others) have put forth, that ALL time travel is in effect creatinga branch-line reality.

Re: Mirror Universe--Alternate Timeline?
I think it's absolutely so that the mirror universe is a parallel/alternate timeline kind of deal. The question is, where is the divergence from the Trek timeline?
If we take the title sequence of the Enterprise mirror ep as showing us scenes from the Mirror universe, then the divergence is very early. Early enough that it was in sailing ship days.
Here's a thought... what if the divergence was right at the start? What if the mirror universe has basically ALWAYS been how it is?

Re: Mirror Universe--Alternate Timeline?
That's very possible. Maybe in that universe, humans are simply more naturaly agressive than 'our' humans?
Personaly, I'd say the likely time that the universes branched off would be at the landing of the Vulcan ship. One universe saw them as allies, the other saw them as something to be exploited.

I doubt there was ever one. Humans have always been amoral bastards. The question is, where is the divergence from the Trek timeline?
What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

That's as may be- but the humans of the MU could be better described as immoral rather than amoral. Either way, there is obviously a point of divergence, because there are the two different universes. I agree that there wouldn't have to be too much difference in human nature; I would think that the divergence would be slightly later than the Vulcan landing - perhaps when humanity sees the type of starships and other technology which the Vulcans have at their disposal.

In the Enterprise title sequence we saw that the lunar landings were done by the Terran Empire. The divergence was not in the future, it was in the past.

I though immoral was usually sexual while amoral was general?immoral rather than amoral.

"immoral" means going against traditional morals, and usuallu implies "bad" or "evil;" "amoral" means without any sense or framework of morality at all.

Re: Mirror Universe--Alternate Timeline?
By that definition I still think amoral suits the Terran empire well.

Re: Mirror Universe--Alternate Timeline?
IDK - I think there are examples of MU folks enjoying their willingness and ability to do whatever they want, along with a bit of sadism. I would definitely call that immoral.

Re: Mirror Universe--Alternate Timeline?
I think the mirror universe is actually separate but parallel to our own rather then an alternate timeline, or as I believe they're called in Trek Cannon Quantum universes. To clarify The difference is that the quantum universes are off shoots of our own, while parallel universes are separate but similar.
