okay, cloning the doctor and ending up with her i can almost understand. here's my retarded theory.

the device was designed to clone either the mermen or humans. presented with the doctors dna it was confused, so it did the only thing it could do. it split his x and y chromosome to x and then reimposed it on itself and fast grew the xx chromosome. thus creating a female out of a male.

how frackin messed up is that???

Who says the doctor is XY?
Birds for example have YY for female XY for male if I remember correctly.

I think he was just going by the fact that he looked human.
