Now I am just as tired, have to be up in 5 hours and can't get to sleep for the life of me. This is not a new occurrence but has been going on for years. I'm really getting f***ing sick of it. Any suggestions?
I go on the computer and watch video's for a few minutes which usually knocks me right out.

Or seeing a doctor for a perscription sleep aid? Ambien is very popular, I understand.

Yeah. At this point, go see a doc and get something to knock you out.

You know...my NA sponsor has some SERIOUS sleep issues. I have periodic bouts of sleep trouble and he's encouraged me to seek relief. If we don't sleep, we've got some BIG FRIGGIN' problems.

Well, I appreciate the input and the concern. Thank you. My sleep patterns are very odd. Some nights it's fine ( i wouldn't say "normal" but normal enough) and others it's terrible. I just needed somewhere to bitch about it at 3 o'clock in the morning :) Some nights it's very useful as I seem to approach my peak creativity between the hours of 1 and 3 in the morning, so for paper writing it occasionally works. Other nights it just annoys me to no end -- which probably doesn't help my sleeping.

Before going to chemical assistance, have you tried the obvious things? Don't drink anything with caffeine, ginseng, guarana, etc. after, say, 6 pm. Warm milk can sometimes help - the rapid absorption of sugars, made more easily absorbed by heating, can help make you drowsy. Alternatively, chamomile tea has a mildly sedative effect, as long as you don't worry about the hit to your machismo for drinking chamomile tea. If you bathe in the evening, cool down the water a bit - water too hot can have a stimulant effect. Also, try some excercise in the evening.

I've also heard that treating your bed purely as a place of sleep can help. Don't eat, watch tv, or even read in bed. If you can't fall asleep after 30 minutes, get out of bed and do something relaxing for a bit before trying again. Don't know if it really works, but the idea is suppose to be to get your mind to associate your bed with sleep and nothing else.

Well, maybe one other thing.

back at work. I think I actually have to work every day this week. Oh wait no, I have a half day Friday.

I'm at work experience at the moment. 2 weeks at a nursing home. It's actually a rather nice one, so it doesn't smell of urine all the time. Only some of it, and mainly isolated to individual rooms, depending on how infirm the client is.
