Non-Sol yards:
  • 40 Eridani A Starfleet Construction Yards
  • Antares Ship Yards
  • Beta Antares Ship Yards
  • Proxima Maintenance Yards
Sol yards:
  • Baikonur Cosmodrome
  • Earth Station McKinley
  • Marin County Starfleet Yards (it should be noted that Marin county is the north end of the Golden Gate, so this may be a renamed San Francisco fleet yards in the alternate future or something)
  • Oakland Fleet Yards
  • San Francisco Fleet Yards
  • Tranquility Base
  • Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards
Unknown yards:
  • Copernicus Ship Yards
  • University of Copernicus (not really relevant to this discussion anyway, but)

Way way biased towards Sol, I tell you what.

EDIT: forgot to put the Antares yard in.

IIRC, Antares and Beta Antares are different shipyards, both outside the Solar System. You could also nearly guarentee the Copernicus Ship Yards are outside the Solar System.
Marin County is probably the San Fransisco one, which on probability, gives non solar system ship yards a number of 5, and solar system shipyards a number of 6. It's very worthy to note, also, that the list of those in the solar system is probably exhaustive (or thereabouts), whereas there's quite a chance there are more outside the Solar System.

That's true (I meant to list both Antareses, I just overlooked the one), but we know that the Ent-Nil, A, D, and E were built in Sol, and U-P is huuuuuge. U-P seems to be the default build site for writers who don't want to invent a new yard. Do we have any canon size estimates for it?

Think of it like a statistical sampling method. So many ships we have seen onscreen have come from Sol, and so many came from outside Sol. Now, I think we lack a sufficient sample size to make any real conclusions, but at the moment it seems like ships are trending towards being more likely Sol-built than not.

The importance of U-P seems best demonstrated by this quote from Parallels:
GEORDI
(indicates screen)
This is Deep Space Five...
Starbase Forty-seven... the Iadara
Colony... and this is the Utopia
Planitia Shipyard.

PICARD
(reacts)
The Utopia Planitia shipyard...
they're responsible for new
starship development...
The implication apparently being that U-P is the Federation's sole starship development facility.

I don't think we've heard of any other places where new ships are developed. (as opposed to new technologies that are later fitted to ships)

I've not got it anymore, but in Relativity I remember seeing a huge number of shipyards when voyager was being built.

Doesnt shipyard reffer to a complex of places. All the ones seen in relativity would be classed as one big shipyard complex.

Yes, Teaos is right. Voyager, as I recall, was built at Earth Station McKinley, so all of those yards in the background are part of that complex.

Indeed, that was U-P.

I can see at least seven TMP-type docks, one McKinley-type dock and three space stations of unknown type.

And there could very well be a lot more behind the camera or in a different part of orbit. No reason to assume thats all of them.

We also need to figure out how long it takes to build a starship. Without knowing that we are never going to get figures we are looking for.

Time and cost would depend on if the builders are union or not.

Yeah, it's tough to finish a starship when you are required to take a half-hour break every fifteen minutes.

Is it possible that Starfleet ships are more resource intensive and/or costlier to build compared to an equivalent Klingon or Romulan ship, because they've been designed to fill multiple roles, or designed and built with greater precision than K/R ships (which, especially Klingon ships, may be more a blunt instrument to Starfleet's scalpels), or just because of their greater technology level (of whatever degree that is)? Does this limit their shipbuilding capacity, so that they can't built this kind of ship in greater numbers than their adversaries build theirs despite the UFP having a greater GDP, as I'd speculated? If this is the case, would it be better to "simplify" their ships somewhat?
