Just rewatched the scene. Assuming all the hits are shown on screen, it hits the Bridge/Nose of the ship one, the wing twice, and then the Bridge/Nose again. All went straight through.

But it still took three proper hits for the ship to go up in smoke. So the lance may have some trouble targeting.

Yeah, I'd imagine it doesn't have much field of fire, and takes a touch longer to fire then a phaser. Still it seems pretty effective against large ships at least. A dozen as part of a large fleet would be great for punching through the lines, or picking off the larger command ships.

Hell just put one on every ship that can fit it. AGT, Nebs and Sovs hold the main line as they could all fit the lance. Akiras lay in the long range firepower and the Defiants and Prommies hit up close. Sounds like a good fleet to me!

I'm not convinced either the Neb or the Sov could be refit in that way - the lance is deep enough that it would interfere with the main deflector, which would not be good.

I don't think the sov would be to much trouble but I can see your point with the neb. Maybe for the neb set it as part of the pod. The attachment would allow for easy removable and repair. It would also allow for it to be connect straight to the WC where this thing much be pulling a lot of power from.

I'm assuming you're putting the lance in to replace the QT turret - if that's the case then it's at least joining the hull metres above the deflector, and possibly going straight through the deflector. The "Sovereign Changes" article on the main site has a good head-on diagram of the Sov a bit over halfway down illustrating this.

I'd put two on the Sov - either side of the Captain's yacht, to not get in the way of the Deflector or of the rapid fire

Not sure 2 would be that more useful then 1. 1 seems able to punch through the shields and the hull of a Klingon Capital ship. And with the narrow field of fire, you could only really hit one target at once.
Then again, you could stick two above the warp engines on a Nebula Class, paint the sides blue and disguise em as another 2 warp engines. Make a nice suprise for the enemy.

I was thinking more of them pointing inwards very slightly so the two beams can meet at some adjustable point. It would also be very nice when used in conjunction with transphasic torpedos - you could probably destroy any ship or station in one full volley - the phasers cut through a hole towards the power core, then a tranphasic pops inside

You could just build a bunch of them as self contained units that only need to be plugged into a power supply. You then bolt them onto anyship capabal of carrying them. It would probably mess with the warp field dynamics bad put for a fleet battle like seen in the final of DS9 were speed is not so much an issue it would be worth it. Keep a few dozen at DS9 and slap them on before leaving.

Recalling Jordanis' objection to the all-competent Main Deflector in my Treknology thread, the real-universe E-D did create a superphaser out of it's main deflector. Unfortunately it was used against a Borg ship which was prepared for it; I'd have been interested to see what that could do against something like those Negh'Vars. Admittedly, it did take quite a while to warm up. Sometimes I've wondered it a ship could simply be modified this way, and Starfleet engineering work out some of the bugs with Geordi's impromptu design. It would have a limited firing arc, due to the saucer above, and (perhaps more importantly
) not look as cool.
