Skill requires practice, which requires time + money for supplies. Some people don't want to spend much of either. Hence, a simplier solution, gift bags.

So you're saying that gift bags with stuffing paper are cheaper then a roll of wrapping paper??? You must be buying your wrapping paper from GW!

Actually, depending on where you get your gift bags, they can be pretty damn cheap...plus they are reusable.

The only person who gives me a Christmas present anymore is my Grandma, and it's always cash. Thank god.

I keep telling everyone "Give me a giftcard, give me cash," but oh no. They say it's not personal enough, it's not from the heart. Would they rather me just get what I want and be happy or get the wrong thing and I either wind up returning it to get what I want or I'm stuck with a thing I didn't want and have no use for? Just cut to the chase and give me money. Saves me time and aggravation and the end result is the same. Besides explaining what I want is a fucking pain in the ass. No, not all computer mice are the same, not all paint is the same, not all brushes are the same. I can give them a list complete with links directly to the things on Amazon or Newegg and they feel compelled to still give it the personal touch by buying something similar but not exactly what I ask for. Que the fucking return process. Fucking hell, either buy from the list or give me money and STOP FUCKING IT UP!

The wonderful thing about living 4000+ Km's from my family is that it's cheaper for them to ship giftcards or money orders. We even got Val's family to start giving them to the kids, though there is always one douche that gets them dollar store toys. Why even bother?

If you ask for a list from someone and then don't buy from you're not being thoughtful, you're being an asshole. Period.

Or you are. They may not be able to afford your choice, for example.

Notice that I said paintbrushes, paints, books, etc and that the gifts I mentioned getting were similar, but not what was requested. I rarely exceed $25 and usually not much more than $15 specifically because I have some respect for people's budgets. Looking back at the list I supplied to people this year there was a single $50 item, three $25ish items, a few $15 DVD's, and a lot of $5 to $10 stuff like paint brushes, books, etc.
