Are you sure that those shields that you keep claiming aren't just special effects errors? Like does the G-Canon novelization support that TIEs have shields?

SFX error or not, that's what was shown in the movie.

SFX errors that happen to be in ANH
and ESB?

IS it that way in both the original and the remastered... because I don't remember seeing it.
The pic would be helpful...

Indeed, we have to take a look at the newer versions of the films to see if the errors remain.

I'm pretty sure I've still got the pic around here somehwere. It clearly shows a laser bolt impacting and detonating on something directly between the solar panels right under the cockpit. Previous shots show nothing there it could hit, just empty space. Thus the only logical explaination is that it hit the shields, which were extended between the two panels. I believe scenes in ESB show a similar incident happening.
I'll go dig out the picture now.

I've got the ANH image, but not the ESB one:

Aye, that's the one I had.
Previous shots clearly show nothing in between or behind the TIE, meaning that it can't be the bolt hitting something else.

Is that shot still in the remastered version?

I looked up the TIE fighter on Databank. It is listed as a cheap fighter meant for swarm tactics. While listed as fragile and underpowered next to X-Wing (which is spoken directly as being able to destroy the TIE in a single shot)... Nothing is mentioned as the TIE having or not having shields. Since we see it in film then it is Canon. The TIE's have shields... pathetic shields that can't withstand a single medium laser shot... but shields non the less.

Perhaps Nav shields only, which would explain why they flared with a glancing blow.
