Hmm, acording the MA's entry on the Stargazer:

Because the loss of a starship is a court martial offense, Picard was court-martialed for the loss of the Stargazer, zealously prosecuted by Phillipa Louvois. In the end, he was absolved of all charges. (TNG: "The Battle", "The Measure Of A Man")

It says there he was court-martialed just for losing the ship. If he was absolved, it'd probably because they found there was no way to save the ship.

Ergo, it has no bearing on whether or not Picard made the right decision.

At this point I don't know why I'm bothering because your either going to ignore, spin or outright lie to refute this:

Picard is clearly a member of the old boys club in SF, he knows numerous Admirals by their first name and a good number of Captains as well. SF has displayed more than one occasion of nepotism. Chances are he got out of it because a "friend" in the Chain of Command" got him off.

And just because he wasn't punished IU does not make his actions any more excusable or our criticisms invalid.

For the same reason Janeway didn't: public opinion. Having connections to numerous admirals probably helped, also.

But he often bends the rules or sees things that others would reject out of hand because it's "impossible" in their opinion. Tales of the Folly is a story set in the Chakat universe with a captain who does things that makes no sense to anyone in Star Fleet or Star Corps. One of his adopted kids once said, "He rejects other's views on reality and substitutes them for his own."

Yes. Janeway got off despite being completely incompetant, and Picard has several friends in the higher ranks.
As such, it's not a major leap to conclude that Picard got off for those same reasons.

hmm...I'm not sure it's as easy as you make it out to be but nothing is impossible. But I've yet to hear an explination as to why he didn't when you make it sound so easy that he could've.

Because he screwed up. Simple as that.

It is as easy as I'm suggesting. We've seen all those methods I mentioned done before, and they didn't take long.
