Ahhhh, like when someone from Greenpeace rammed a Coast Guard frigate with his motor raft. The funny times when you see a raft crumble and the guy get sucked down into the props...

I'd just always assumed it wasn't a problem outside of that corridor of space. Something to do with the spatial whatever it was that forced you to follow that particular path in the first place compressing the subspace waves or your favorite technobabble explanation.

Or they installed filters in the nacelles to produce "cleaner" emissions!

That's what I've always assumed, too. Some weird as all heck area with subspace whatever was the problem. Her blowing up her ship was the final straw.

I got the impression that while the effect was limited to the Herakas Corridor at the time, all spce was vulnerable. Like walking on the same piece of carpet over and over again - it's that pice that gets worn, but that doesn't mean the rest of the carpet's immune.

I'm pretty sure it was stated that all space was vulnerable to that damage. That particular corridor was juts in a particularly bad state.

Eh, well, if the effects were so reduced in the rest of normal space that it hadn't been noticed, than it should be easier to prevent any damage to normal space. Maybe only in the corridor were things so bad that a warp speed limit needed to be imposed. BTW, I'd interpreted the warp speed limitations thing in "The Pegasus" as more of a standard (engineering) limit on cruising speed thing than the more extreme Warp 5 thing; since we've routinely seen ships going past wart 5 after the ep to begin with, it wouldn't seem to make sense that on just one occasion Picard (of all Captains) needed special permission from an Admiral to exceed Warp 5 while other captains (and Picard himself) do it all the time.

Then why would Picard need permission, no matter what the reasons for the restriction?

I should make it clear that I didn't think Picard needed the permission to exceed Warp 5, but whatever the broader cruising speed limit that I mentioned was - that last sentence wasn't phrased well. I was trying to say that it wouldn't make sense for Picard to need permission to go over Warp 5 when it's commonly done, so the permission he got was for a higher speed that is a general restriction. Though we've seen Captains do that in emergency situations without an authorization, this may have been done in this case since this was not an emergency, at least that Picard knew of.

Maybe it was something that at first seemed like a good idea so the captains were following it, and then it just became so common place to do that they stopped asking permission.
Like for example in elementary school they always had you raise your hand to do anything but then in middle school less restrictions and in high school you very rarely have to raise your hand. Does anybody get the analogy?

I've often wondered why Captains seem to pick warp speeds at random. Wouldn't it make sense to just go to maximum and get there as quick as possible? Maximum being normal cruising speed during normal circumstances or maximum sustainable during emergencies.

Like Janeway persuing a vital enemy at the breakneck speed of warp 2?
