That way troops being garrisoned are relatively cheap but when you send them off to fight they get really expensive which I think is far more indicative of what's going on. Would you figure the power stating what speed they want? Also, I'd probably have newly minted troops go into the deploy category so you can assign them to worlds for garrison duty or leave them deployed to go to the front lines.BigJKU316 wrote:This makes sense. I think what works best here is to just cut the cost of troops by quite a bit and then insert a small module somewhere for transport cost. My thinking was each power just pays for X capacity and Y speed and the sheet figures a cost. Seems the simplest way to solve the issue.

Re: BETA SIM OOC THREAD
Ok, basically what I am trying right now is cutting procurement cost for troops by a factor of nearly 10 making them much cheaper to buy in large numbers. Garissoned troops have had their maint. cost cut drastically as well with the definition being troops of your deployed on a major world in your system.
On the other hand the cost for deployed troops is quite high, higher than the maint. cost for troops was to begin with. That is defined as any forces embarked on a fleet or deployed on a non-major world of yours.
Transports I have made so that they can run the gamut of speed and size, though you can only have one size and speed in your fleet at any one time. If you want to upgrade the GM can figure the difference in the cost of the two forces and charge you accordingly but you would have to upgrade the whole fleet to keep the accounting simple. Transports are really pretty cheap if you don't make them as fast as can be and you make them big to haul a lot of troops. Of course this means you might see 1 million elite troops wiped out if one enemy slips through to your transport fleet but that is the trade off.
One thing I think should be added is that so long as those troops are deployed you must dedicate the transport to keeping them supplied, you can't just drop them and run. All transports are considered to be build in commercial yards that would build freighters rather than your shipyards. They don't impact your shipyard capacity that way but they do draw on your raw materials resources.
Fleets will have an organic transport capacity to move troops as well so you can accomplish many smaller task without building transports at all. But again it will tie up that fleet until the operation is concluded.
I think this will add some interesting dynamics.
1. It will make a fight for a minor world expensive for both sides, since both would pay deployed prices and it would likely bring troop numbers down on those worlds to something more similar to what we see in Trek. This will stop every invasion from being a total bloodbath and allow for more strategy in movement where you might bypass a major world to seize a foothold on a minor one and so forth.
2. It will make a major invasion of a major world a very massive undertaking. You will need lots of transport capacity to take on a major world where the opposition can get troops much cheaper than you can. This gives more chances for intel to pick up on things and raids to disrupt such plans as the amassing of sufficient transport to move say 100 million troops against Bajor would take some time.
I had some of this stuff in a beta draft of the sheet that I discarded, but I think the new way I put it on there should work better. Staplic and I will has out how to implement this and see if we are both on the same page, but I think it is a good thing moving forward. Thanks for the comment Tyyr.

Re: BETA SIM OOC THREAD
alright here's an update for everyone:
Next week I'm on Thanksgiving Break, so this week has been a nightmare, I have the last of 3 tests today with two projects also having been due this week, so I've only even done a few spreadsheets. Therefore I will get the sheets done this weekend/monday and have them mailed back out. Sheets will NOT be due this upcoming Tuesday the 23rd. You will have a week and they will be due again on the 30th.
Hopefully over break I will be able to put together a trade map, and maybe another Jane's Guide.

Got ya. So....its like free intel.
I'm tired of playing a small/weak power. Next game, I'm gonna be the UFP or the Klingons dammit!

kind of.....there have been 2-3 guides posted in Alpha, and I did one in Beta right before we opened the turns up to combat etc.Mark wrote:Got ya. So....its like free intel.

The CU is a solid 4th in my view if run properly. Really the Romulans by all rights are given the resources to compete with the Klingons.Mark wrote:Got ya. So....its like free intel.

Re: BETA SIM OOC THREAD
I'm not sure how they were loaded out in Beta, but it seemed like the Breen were the 4th power, due to sheer navel size. The only reason I climbed to where I'm at in Alpha is because of my fortuitious alliance with the Federation from the first turn I took them over.

Re: BETA SIM OOC THREAD
Even the smaller powers can have their strengths. Less territory to protect means its easier to operate a Destroyer heavy fleet since range isn't important. That allows you to match the local combat ability of the larger powers who need Cruisers to cover their space effectively.
