If you'd ever had poi, you'd know it was unfortunately not a joke. It really is the Hawai'ian answer to Vegemite, just without the small mitigating benefit of B vitamins.

True. Though to be fair, I suppose Vegemite is popular in Australia because it's more palatable with taste buds dulled by a national pastime of beer-swilling.

My mom went to Hawai'i a long time ago, to Oahu, and had some poi at a luau. She likened it more to wallpaper paste than spackle. Maybe hers was fresher.

Very generally, single-syllable words are made into a superlative by adding a suffix rather than the modifier "more." I believe "fresher" is correct.
