Here's some interseting trivia for you: You can evade an Apache's thermal sight by hiding behind a large tree. And when the chopper moves you keep the tree between you and it. Hard to do with anything bigger than a section but sometimes that's all you need.

That only works if the chopper didn't see you from the start. If they did then they'd just shoot THROUGH the tree.

The only major improvements Longbow offered were the radar, greatly improved computer systems, allowing it to track and engage more targets simultaneously, and a glass cockpit. None of which help you see through trees.
