Yes - according to Memory Alpha, "In an alternate timeline created when the USS Enterprise-C disappeared from the Battle of Narendra III, Cetacean Ops was a department aboard the warship USS Enterprise-D. Shortly after the Enterprise-C emerged from the temporal rift, Joshua Kim was paged to Cetacean Ops. (TNG: "Yesterday's Enterprise")"

Aye, so we've no reason to believe they're on the "real" E-D.

"What?! Why?"

"All available power has been diverted to replicating 8,242 orders of tekka make."

I'd make a joke about Killer Whales if I could think of one - I'd have thought that the alternate Enterprise would be less likely to have whales on board.

Also, as whales became extinct, are all these whales then the descendants of George and Gracie - wouldn't genetic defects set in if they're all descendended from a bunch of brothers and sisters? They should be moronic whales, not Starfleet Operatives.

It's suppose to be dolphines, not whales. And it was only humpback whales that went extinct, not all whales.

That's my thinking as well Rochey.......since it was on the E-D in an alternate timeline, cannon for "this" timeline goes out the window.

I write it off as a mistaken quote. More sense to say they were studying whales then say they used them as crew.

Wow, so I'm the only one mildly amused by the idea of dolphins on board and ok with it?

I mean, on a list of the stupid shit Starfleet does this wouldn't even break the top ten.

#1 Non existant security protocols

#2 Universally accessable control panels

#3 Explosive consoles

#4 No seatbelts (until the end of Nemesis)

#5 Unsecured critical areas

#6 Give officer commissions to untrained and unqualified personel along with all security access with said rank.

#7 Children on ships

#8 Declairing Holodecks "safe"

#9 Men in mini skirts

#10 Giving couseler's positions on the bridge

Hmm...you DO seem to be right.

You forgot the GCS warp core and the complete lack of anything resembling a proper army.

Seriously, making arrangements for dolphins on board is nothing compared to the other stuff. Dolphins on board are just goofy but non-threatening. Half the shit on that list is in the category of shit that will vaporize the ship.

You mean numbers 11 and 12?

You know, that would be a rather fun poll to do. Compile a Daystrom list of the "offical" top ten dumbest things Starfleet has ever done.
