Do you think that it's a good idea for Trek XI to be set in TOS era?

Yes, it's a good a time as any.

$20 says they show Kirk doing that unbeatable training thing.

I wouldn't bet against you. And Abrams' expressed feelings on the matter seem to confirm GK's analysis.

Indeed. So far, I'm not sure whether that's for the better or not.

For the worse.

If your going to make a trek movie follow established rules.

If your not going to do that you may as well just make a generic sci-fi movie, no need to slap the name of trek on it. Its just whoring out the name then.

Yep. You'd be better served calling it the ENT movie. :P

That's what I was thinking of. If he ignores all the ENT crap, then that's good. If he ignores the TOS stuff, that's bad.

Surely they'll have throw some cliches in though? I'm sure they'll have to include one or two nods to the past (or the future, if you will) like a few 'I'm a doctor not a mechanic Jim' or a 'she cannae tek nae more Captain' etc etc. You know, tired old ST cliches that you don't need to be a Trekker to get.

Ahhhh, what do I know. Just wishful thinking probably :)

My perfectly unqualified prediction is that people's curiosity into how a new cast will play old characters, coupled with *hopefully* learned lessons from the past 10 years will make it a modest box office success and we, as more informed ST fans will have a few gripes but on the whole will find it good :)

I hope you're right, both about the "in jokes" and about the success of the film.

Welcome, BTW! :D

I read a thing on Ain't It Cool News about the story relating to the Kobyashi Maru...

SPOILERS!

Apparently they do make an issue of Kirk beating the no win scenario the way he did. In this script, it's a big controversial thing in Starfleet; while the official line was the "good on you for original thinking" attitude we heard about in ST II, a LOT of people take a more "why didn't we kick his cheating ass out of the academy" line. The AICN story even talked of people waving protest signs at Kirk's graduation ceremony.

Awesome. I would love to finally see some outrage at that situation, rather than the, "Aww, it's OK because he's the protagonist of the story" attitude that has been presented so often.

Only thing that I'm concerned about is the cannon and timeline screwup. They are including Sulu, Uhuha, and Chekov. Ok, maybe I can see Sulu and Uhura being say midshipmen on a training cuise right before graduation, but Chekov? He shouldn't even be in the acadamy yet. Curious to see how they will play this out, but I'm REALLY afraid they will just ignore cannon again, and "re-invent" it.

I see no point in them.

It was like watching SW episode III, is Anakin going to turn dark... yeah I think he might.
