Re: TOS Federation Battlefleet and size
Your biggest problem is that you are applying thought to this... That is a big no no. As for the E-nil being the closest ship. It was only the closest ship when there weren't other ships nearby. There were a number of times that the E-nil wasn't the only SF ship in the area. Space is just big, hard to have a ship everywhere. As to generations, that whole movie was just bullshit. Kill off Kirk (the single greatest hero of the UFP) and begin a new chapter of heros (who all fucking suck) to take up the job. The only good that came out of that movie was that the Flagship of the UFP was no longer a GCS timebomb. But, still somehow they fucked that up and had the E-D knocked out by an old Bird of Prey that couldn't hold its own waste. That's like a prize fighter lossing to an old man that's shitting himself and can't find a diaper.

But yet they can make new weapons out of seemingly garbage in a few daysGrahamKennedy wrote: Exotic components. There may be components of a starship which are complex, difficult and time consuming to produce. For instance Rick Sternback suggested that producing a warp coil is a lengthy process which involved heating the coil to high temperature and then letting it cool over a very long period in a very controlled way before adding another layer to it and repeating, over and over again. For all we know shield systems, weapon systems, and any number of other systems may be just as difficult. Such exotic components could create huge bottlenecks in Starship production.

Maybe it's the hulls that take alot of time. Is duranium and tritainium quickly replecatable?

It's a sort of conjectural supersymmetric "shadow particle". In a word, .Rochey wrote:What in the hell is a spartacle?

They seem to be able to patch it easily enough.Mark wrote:Maybe it's the hulls that take alot of time. Is duranium and tritainium quickly replecatable?

Sure, in small pieces. I was thinking that MAYBE they could replicate the base metals for those alloys, but still had to forge them manually, which is why ship construction moves at a limited pace.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not sure I believe that, but the idea DID occur to me.

Then we will put both Sparticles inside a particle accelerator. May the best subatomic molecule win.

What does defeat mean to you?
Nothing it will never come. Death before defeat. I don’t bend or break. I end, if I meet a foe capable of it. Victory is in forcing the opponent to back down. I do not. There is no defeat.

Re: TOS Federation Battlefleet and size
I'm assuming the Federation engineers and construction crews can handle subtraction. If it is estimated to take 12 months to construct the hull of a ship (based on prototyping and experience), then the engineers will start construction at month 0, and the scheduling crew will make sure the right materials will be available at the right times. This will involve plotting out mining and refining operations, travel times, storage issues, excess due to screwups, etc.Mark wrote:Maybe it's the hulls that take alot of time. The engineers will be able to plot out over time how much material is needed at certain points of time duuring construction. The supply personnel then have to look over the what is available, and tell the Engineers if their schedule can work as listed,or if they have to adjust it. This is what Starship engineers and supply officers call 'fun'.
If it takes a long time to replicate/machine the pieces, then smart engineers will have multiple pieces being machined simultaneously. This leads into the fun of making sure the pieces fit together beforehand, so you don't have to start the process all over again.

I see no basis for that assumption.Coalition wrote:I'm assuming the Federation engineers and construction crews can handle subtraction.
