eventually we could get to the point where all we see is the down stuff.

The good things/okay things will blow past us like they weren't even there b/c we're not watching trek to see trek, we'd be watching to see how much more they've f'd it up this time.

I have that problem with sports. After a game, win or loose, I'll often be down on myself because rather than thinking about the should-be goals that I saved, I only think about the goals I let in, what I should have done differently, why I didn't save it...and while a little of this is good and helps me learn, I can get to the point where it's almost self-destructive, especially if we loose.

There's plenty of good things in Trek that have been pointed out numerous times on this forum. That said, if we just sit around here and talk about how awesome Trek is, well were going to get pretty bored pretty fast. How many ways can we say that it was awesome that TOS had a black woman on TV?

If our criticisms are valid, I don't see how it's over the top.

There are also times when critisism of a character is not the same as criticism of Trek generally. Take Valiant for example - you'd be hard pushed to find someone who didn't think Tim Watters (and, for that matter, his entire crew) was an arrogant, overconfident idiot. Mainly because that was the entire point of the episode - that while esprit de corps is generally a good thing, taken too far it can cause serious problems.

well, not that stuff, it's normal and I do that too.

what I'm talking about is something like DS9:

when I first got on the site there was some thread where someone was critizising it for becoming a bloody battle ground like all the other sci-fi shows and that it wasn't trek, and people attacked it from that point.

Then in the same thread, (or another thread in the same forum) people are critizising Trek for being so happy-go lucky, with no battles, wars, or "dark side to it.

I always got the impression that people didn't object to these because they did or didn't do it but because it was often poorly done.

Because it eventually reaches a point where I honestly ask myself:

1. Am I watching the same show the others are?

2. Am I somehow... off for liking said show?

3. What do they actually like about Trek?

You know, there is such a thing as having a different opinion.

That you like X doesn't necessarily mean I'll like X.
