More evidence that they don't exist I suppose.

Worst case scenario is that Picard could simply have handed over to his 2iC and stayed behind to phaser the warp core.

Why should a nominally competent captain stay behind in what is obviously an unwinable solution? Isn't it better to save your parent organization whatever resources you can? ie: those used in training and recruiting new officers? and most people I know enjoy living.

Not in this case, it resulted in the Ferengi getting their hands on his ship.

I never liked that tradition, personally. It's all to possible to have excellent captains killed through such actions.

Of course, in thsi case we've demonstrated many times that he could have survived AND still done the right thing, i.e. ensure the destruction of the Stargazer.

Exactly. It wasn't a case of "he could save everyone or risk everyone".

It shouldn't even fall on the captain. It should be one of the engineering crew. One of them stays behind, when the crew is at a safe range he/she blows the ship. Never allow the enemy gain from your loss.

Ultimately, however, the fate of the ship is the CO's responsibility.

Then he should have remembered to leave someone behind.

Or set scuttling charges, or tried using the shuttles phasers, or stayed behind himself - there's a whole list of thing he could and should have done, but didn't.

The captain staying behind should only happen if there is no other choice. Like avoiding capture or too badly injured to survive.
