I had an idea for a cutter.........you know, like a patrol (ie police) craft.

It would need to hold a comparitively high warp to chase down pirates and smuggelers and such

I see it holding two well armed runabouts (specially modified)

Some kind of intridiction / subspace disrupter to force ships from warp (like what Kor used to force the Dominion out of warp)

A crew of around 16, with a dozen or so specially trained boarders and crews for the runabouts

I'm seeing at least two forward firing phasers and maybe two forward firing torpedo tubes (i'd love full sized, but micro torps may have to do)

Decent shields

A large brig area and tractor beams powerful enough to grap and hold other ships

What do you guys think? Is this doable??? Shipbuilding ISN'T my strong suit.

It might need to be SLIGHTLY larger than you thought to provide that much power to the tractor beam, but I'd say yes.

As to the Connie being used for patrol duty - the hulls are just too old. I wouldn't trust them to hold up to the stresses of space flight.

They would all be looking slightly sick every time the hull made any kind of groaning or noise at all :worried:

I, like it, given a few modifications to make it work, it sounds like a solid patoller.

Starship design is a slow process.

and don't forget the review process:

If there's twelve now....cary the one.....subtract the three......multiply the recipricle....
we'll be lucky to have one make it to prototype construction.

We've done better than Starfleet so far.

Look in the archive for the DITL Battleship, for which I have still yet to do the final work up for.

Why not have a refitted refit Constitution class? (Sounds crazy, but I think it works...)

Keep the basic 2290s refit Constitution design, but improve the weaponry - think phaser arrays instead of ball turrets phasers, and burst fire torpedo launchers.
Next, add a landing capability. I checked the center of gravity for the Constitution refit with a scale model and I find that it's near the engineering hull.
Add landing pads there and possibly a disembarkation stairway below the deflector dish.
(All this is a great alternative whenever the transporter doesn't work in unfavorable conditions)

Jim Kirk would (probably) love it.

Thout would be similar to refitting the Cutty Sark with nimitz class technology. Both aren't compatible, not only by a gap of technology, but also via the gap of time. The very space frame is already worn out prety badly and bou time to be scrapped, if that wasn't any earlier.

shran, thanks for the link, i got to the thread.

I'd always thought that was the discussion over designing the USS Daystrom from the Roleplaying thread.

No - the Daystrom was always an Akira-class ship.

The Paladin-class started out as a thought experiment, and ended up being used in the second(?) and third Daystrom RPGs.
