Akula Class (BARS) (Type 971) (SSN)
Active 11 known, 3 possible unknown. *Says building or built but not confirmed*
Known names are BARS, LEOPARD, PANTERA, PUMA, VOLK, TIGR
Displacement surfaced tons 7500
Displacement dived tons 9100
Length, 360.1 feet or 110 meters
Beam 45.9 feet or 14 meters
Draught 34.1 feet or 10.4 meters.
Typhoon Class (Type 941) (SSBN)
Active 6, no names listed.
Displacement surfaced tons 21500
Displacement dived tons 26500
Length 562.7 feet or 171.5 meters
Beam 80.7 feet or 24.6 meters
Draught 42.7 feet or 13 meters
Some of your data here is out of date. The Type 941 compleated 6 ships of that class in total, 1 active and 2 laid up. The Type 971's Russian name is also Shchuka-B. And there are 16 subs of the type 971 class. There are three sub-classes or flights of Shchuka, consisting of the original seven "Akula I" submarines built between 1982 and 1986, five "Improved Akula" submarines built between 1986 and 1991, and four "Akula II" submarines built from 1991. This information is disputed, however, as the distinction between the Improved Akula and the Akula II class is debated by authoritative sources.

Oh, I should mention that not all the Akulas are still in service. Of the seven original Akula-I submarines, only three are known to still be in service, the five improved Akulas are all thought to be in service, and the Akula-II Vepr is the only Akula-II known to be in service at present

The book is listed for 1996 so it wouldn't shock me that its out of date.

Wow. All this submarine talk has me itching to go home and watch "The Hunt for Red October". (Still wondering why a Russian skipper spoke with an English accent though. Must be Quantum
)

Oh boy. A bit of advice for you Mark - if you're ever over this side of the pond do
not, under any circumstances, call a Scot "English". They really don't like it.

No, he's a Sean. But he is a Scot.
Seriously, have you ever heard him speak?

Sure. But my experience with accents from Europe is limited to what I see on TV, aside from the occasional tourest I've bumped into. I would have very little to compare it to.

I saw something a while back about a major upgrade to the remaining "Typhoons", but I haven't heard anything since. Heard anything?

The only 'upgrade' I've heard about is the TK-208 aka the RFS Dmitriy Donskoy's 20 R-39 missiles being replaced with the most advanced Russian submarine-launched ballistic missile to date, the Bulava. Although she was built as a third generation submarine, she is now referred to as a fourth generation one due to her extensive modifications. The other serviceable hulls may be modernized at some point in the future but that is not certain at this point however they are more likely to be replaced by the new Borei class submarines, the first of which was commissioned in February of this year. It should be noted that as of July 2008 no Bulava missile have been produced for the Yury Dolgoruky, the first ship of the Borei class.
