Well, I'd like to think that it would move rather than just sit and take fire, but yes - with the kind of torp armament it has, I'd say it's definitely a stand-off type of ship.
That said, I took the liberty of taking advantage of the 360-degree torp coverage in the RP thread and doing the exact opposite of what I just said.

That was good stuff. Why not fly through a formation, and let loose with all tubes at multiple targets? Especially given that we're in an asteroid field with limited mobility.

I swear I remember a Saber Class in "Sacrifice of the Angels" but upon review, I can't find it. Am I imagining this?

No it's there.

Against smaller targets like BoPs, Bugs, Hideki or breen that would work well. Against ships any heavier you would suffer from your lack of defensive ablity.

Like I said - it was great for storytelling purposes, but not really how I envision the Akira being used.

May I ask what lack of defensive ability. There are probably only 4 ships in fed fleet wich could have stronger shields. And the phaser power is againe bigger only on 4-5 ships. And from those 4-5 ships two are just out of the development phase.

Agreed, but...

Definitely not agreed, I think even ships like Intrepid/Excelsior classes would have greater phaser power than the Akira.

Yeah the Akira has pretty much no phasers. Just the bear minimum needed to cover it.

The Akira's phasers - what few there are, anyway - seem to have been included for last-ditch close-in defense, nothing more.

Agreed. The Akira is a torpedo boat, nothing more.

Had to go to the main site to check a few pictures. The phaser array runs the same way around the saucer as those on the GSC or a Nebula or any other SF ship. Don't know how that can be called a minimum of phasers if its the standart fed armement.

Any continuous strip is a single array.

Indeed. We're calling it underarmed due to the fact that it has only one such array.

One on the top, one on the bottom and there are two that run for a short while down the catamaran structure.
On a GSC its the same only that there is one on the bottom of the enginering section. And that's it.
