Hearsay has it thusly: Fisher and Hamill both signed three-picture deals, Ford signed individually for IV and V but then thought that there was nowhere to go with the Solo character after V. Apparently, he only agreed to return for VI after Lucas had a confab with him to explain the plans for Solo.

It got him into ROTJ. So I'm glad whatever it was.

I think he knew he was getting the girl... the original dialog before he got dipped in the fro-yo called for something much less final, IIRC something even intimating a reunion in the future. Ford petitioned Kershner for the dialog the way it stands. As I understand, Ford thought that Solo had outlived his usefulness to the overall plot until Lucas explained that he had an important role to play in RotJ. Not so much that Solo got to be self-important, but that he was still a useful part of the story.
