Fucking coons! They got in the garbage again last night!

They hadn't been around for a couple years, ever since Mrs. K beat one with a broom. Guess it's time to bungie the cans down and spray them with hot sauce again.

Wow. For a second there, I thought you'd gone all CSA on us.

You'll probably appreciate the horror short I'm working on, if you've had trouble with raccoons before.

I was just wondering what raccoons had to do with the CSA but the urban dictionary told me. Not sure what the hell raccoons have to do with blacks but none of that stuff makes sense.

I had a feeling that slang wouldn't register. And, I haven't a clue either, but it sure popped up on my screens as soon as you said that.

I've heard it a million times down here.

Let's clarify; my dad was a hardcore racist f*ckhead who beat the sh*t out of my mom. I hate him, and my hatred of him bleeds over onto racists.

"F*cking coons" set that off, so I decided to make a joke about it; I know that wasn't what your statement meant, Kendall. Apologies.

I know the slang. And its because black people have white hands/feet/eyes just like a racoon apparently.

Eh? Raccoon feet are grey, just like the rest of them. Save for the black strips on the tail and face.

No harm, no foul dude. I am doubly glad now that I don't live in the South though. ;)

Most racist slang is lost on me

How did a white man become a honkie??? I don't see the SLIGHTEST connection.

What's the origin of "honky"?
October 21, 1988
Dear Cecil:

Your tireless research into etymology is to be applauded. The word I want you to trace for me is "honky"--where does it come from and how long has it been in use?

PS: I love your books. The only thing wrong with living in France is that I can't get your column or barbecue potato chips.

Dear David:

I like a man who's got his priorities straight. Honky comes from bohunk and hunky, derogatory terms for Bohemian, Hungarian, and Polish immigrants that came into use around the turn of the century. According to Robert Hendrickson, author of the Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins, black workers in Chicago meat-packing plants picked up the term from white workers and began applying it indiscriminately to all Caucasians. Probably thought they all looked alike.

ANOTHER SOURCE FOR HONKY

Dear Cecil:

Your source for the origin of honky only gave you half the story. Another probable etymon for honky, cited by David Dalby in his "African Element in American English" (to be found in my Rappin' and Stylin' Out: Communication in Urban Black America) is the Wolof term honq, "red, pink," a term frequently used in to describe white men in African languages. --Tom Kochman, professor of communication, University of Illinois at Chicago

And your queery is answered.

It's racism, how much rational thought do you expect it to have been given?

Well I expect at least enough to be able to look at a raccoon, look at a black guy and go "hmm, nothing alike."

Aye, it's an odd one. Most other slurs at least have understandable origins.
