There is a difference between text speak and internet slang.

Internets speak tends to just be acronyms ie AFIK, IMO ect.

Text speak tends to be that retarded way of dropping letters and merging words.

quite so, like would be spelled "lyk" and what are you up to would be "wot u up 2" if they dont use the slang version of "wuu2?"

I feel dumber for just having read that.

I despised text speak since I first saw it, taking up writing as a hobby has only made my hatred stronger.

I get that, but usually once you've been exposed to one, the other tends to be easier to learn (kind of like now that I've studied french, any other latin based language will be easier to learn than french orrigionally was) I hadn't been exposed to either internet/texting before joining.

The amount of people that think taht I am weird for using real speak instead of text speak is just infuriating. It disgusts me that people consider "wot u up 2" as being a substitute for correct language. The worse i hate most in text speak is Anything, or "nyfink/any'fink". Not only does it shorten but it even adds a frigging k? what the fuck for?! text speak is supposed to shorten, not add a K in?

I don't even use text-speak when I'm texting... I mean, "txtng."

I refuse to. Even my mother is beginning to do it, which really annoys me to no end.

My wife bugs me about how long it takes me to type things out when I text her.

Well 1) it's a keypad not a fucking keyboard. Gimme a keyboard and I'll text at 50 wpm like I can type. And 2) I have some fucking respect for the language.

It gives much pleasure that I can type considerably faster than most people in Top Set E3S1 ICT can type in text speak (i'm about 67 wpm)

I've never been taught how to type in my life, just learnt to touch type (informally though) on my own.

Same here. And I'm with you all the way, texting shorthand is annoying as hell.

We have mandatory classes in 8th and 9th grades, then two optionall classes here at the high school that teach how to type as well as the different features of microsoft word/office.

IT has only recently become compulsary (recently as in the last decade or so) IIRC, and typing isnt even a offered course at my school. You can do it at college though.
