that's what i always used to think.

brought up another question in Nemisis, even if Troi is a bridge officer (mainly to council Picard) why would the coucilor be privie to information that could betray the ship if someone penitrated her thoughts?

I mean if they ever get low enough that Troi has to take command they better not be using any of the systems other than the warp to get the F*** out of there.

She's there to keep her away from people who need counseling. Wouldn't want to traumatize them any further, you know.

Her role's pretty obvious once you a) take a look at the Federation's economic ad politic system in TNG (i.e. Communism) and b) look at who's usually spouting the party line about war, poverty, despair, etc being eliminated. She's a political commissar.

Man, what I wouldn't give to have her start spouting that "we're so enlightened and better than you" crap to Cain or Gaunt...

Or you take a look at what her job is, how many times she gave Picard information from reading the emotions of enemy captaines.
It communism realy, you know it dosent look like communism.
Do you even know how powerfull political commisars were.

Yes, she also used her abilities in that manner. She was also the one who consistently pushed the Prime Directive, even when everyone else was (rightly) having second thoughts. It was her who consistently peddled the party line of warp, poverty, etc being wiped out. It was her who took great pains to tell the new arrivals in "The Neutral Zone" how rosy the future was (conveniently leaving out the various dramas).

Bullshit. No money, no concept of investment, no privately owned vehicles, no private businesses aside from a few speciality places that have never mentioned payment, government owned comminications, the works.

Directly, not very. Their power, in respect of those who outranked them, was mainly limited to their reports back to HQ, which could easilly get a man fired (if he was lucky). On the spot their powers were restricted to threats.

Indeed, she's been of some use at times, such as when she helped locate the Scimitar in NEM.
The problem is that she A) states the blindingly obvious all the time, and B) seems to be chief propaganda officer on the E-D.

It's definitely communism. It fits the description in every single way. It only doesn't look like it because the writers themselves aren't trying to portray a communist nation, it just ended up that way by accident.
Do you even know how powerfull political commisars were.
As a matter of fact, I do. And real commissars were nothing like their 40K counterparts. They couldn't whip out a pistol and execute you on a whim, but they could very easily ruin your career with one carefuly worded report.
