We all know I'm not the kind of person to insult other people for being stupid, dump, retarded, pathetic, worthless or meaningless in life. But sometimes I just feel this need to butcher the trek writers.

Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
Hey, both kinds of writers have taken certain....liberties. Another that I read had Sisko return from the wormhole to assist with the Romulan Civil Upheaval (directly leading up to Nemisis) at which point Picard introduces his first officer Colonel Riker, and his counseler, Colonel Troi. Stopped reading there.Mikey wrote:Yeah, but they're usually the staff writers, not the fans.Rochey wrote:Hey, people have written stupider things.

I may not be the military historian that Seafort or Deep are, but those aren't even naval ranks, right?

What Colonel? No it's an Army/Air Force rank. Unless your in one of the more bizarre Asian militaries like the PLAN (Red Chinese Navy) who use a ridiculous Army rank system.Mikey wrote:I may not be the military historian that Seafort or Deep are, but those aren't even naval ranks, right?
Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
Makes no sense, unless they eloped to somewhere like Bajor, resigned from Starfleet, and accepted commissions in the Bajoran Militia for the duration of the story. You'd think that people attempting to write a story in the Trek universe would at least know a couple of the basics

Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
There was a Colonel in ST:VI about who's job we know nothing and the Director (or whatever it was) that Sloan posed as who had the same number of pips as a Starfleet Captain.Mark wrote:Makes no sense, unless they eloped to somewhere like Bajor, resigned from Starfleet, and accepted commissions in the Bajoran Militia for the duration of the story. Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
That's true. I'd always assumed he was in the Starfleet Marine Corps ( or the equivelent ), Cololnel West I think.

Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
Well we already know that they don't exist thanks to Kirks line in TOS that they are a combined service.Mark wrote:That's true. I'd always assumed he was in the Starfleet Marine Corps ( or the equivelent ), Cololnel West I think.
Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
Yes, but things change quickly in the ST universe, right? Possible that when they switched uniforms again, between eliminating the Commodore rank, they decided to split them again. A Marine rank for an officer in a primarily Naval based system make more sense than it being a job title, don't you think?

Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
If there was some evidence other than a rank I could agree with you. For all we know different trades/corps have different ranks, ie: Colonel West could have been a security officer or an intel officer. Several Canadian Forces trades have different terms for the same rank: Signaller/Sapper/Apprentice for Private for example.Mark wrote:Yes, but things change quickly in the ST universe, right? Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
Hmm...interesting point. Have to admit, I didn't think of that. Would make sense if he was Intel or Special Forces of some kind, since he WAS planning Kirk's rescue

Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
One of the "benefits" of having served in a military that used to be a combined service I suppose.Mark wrote:Hmm...interesting point. Have to admit, I didn't think of that. Would make sense if he was Intel or Special Forces of some kind, since he WAS planning Kirk's rescue
Re: Romulans....what were they doing?
Its interesting to note that West wore the insignia of a Vice Admiral. In some contries though Colonel is used as an appointment, generally meaning the Head of a Unit, typically in a ceremonial fashion such as the various Colonel in Chiefs of Commonwealth Regiments. Its possible that he was in charge of some type of unit, possibly like modern Navy Seals since his role was to present a rescue plan...Cpl Kendall wrote:There was a Colonel in ST:VI about who's job we know nothing and the Director (or whatever it was) that Sloan posed as who had the same number of pips as a Starfleet Captain.Mark wrote:Makes no sense, unless they eloped to somewhere like Bajor, resigned from Starfleet, and accepted commissions in the Bajoran Militia for the duration of the story.
