I now have a laptop. It's my secondary computer, for light uses - but it might eventually prove useful for the purposes of my senior design project when i build it next fall. This is an older one - as in a decade old! Compaq Presario 1825 - pentium 2 mobile @ 366 mhz, 192 mb pc100 RAM, 6.5 GB HDD.

However, i was able to resurrect it by installing a very stripped down version of ubuntu linux with a lightweight desktop called "fluxbox." The base system is still ubuntu, so I have access to the huge ubuntu package repositories and being the most popular desktop variant of linux, online support is plentiful. You can tell that it worked since i'm writing this post from the laptop.

I got it for free - my friend Frank had it lying around collecting dust and gave it to me. It needs a new main battery as well as a new cmos battery (i'm running it straight from the power adapter); whille i'm at it i'll upgrade the hard drive to 20 gb and the proc to a 400 mhz p2. The cost of these parts is a bit under $100, but it's worthwhile for a number of reasons, including the practice working with laptops (which i might end up needing later).

It does have a dvd-rom drive, so it plays dvds. No wireless card; i may get a usb wifi stick from Frank though. It's enough to do basic browsing (firefox) and other things. I have a second network cable in my room so i'm on my bed writing this with this and my desktop (far more modern and up to spec machine) both on and connected to the network.

Unfortunately, no. Different college under CUNY - he's at "City College" in Manhattan.

When it comes to living alone, Dad said that the thing that got him worst was the awful quiet lonelyness that happened after a few weeks. Hence he got a cat which promptly got mauled by Aunt Sally's Doberman (we think) so he got a dog instead.

I like the peace and quiet. Dealing with things is easier when you dont have to look others in the face and talk about it. Thats why I like camping and fishing. Its just me.

I'm quite happy living on my own. You can set everything just the way you want, don't have to worry about other people eating your food, can do what you like in the house, and have lots of peace and quiet (a definite plus for me, given what I do).
That said, it can get a bit lonely if it's just you on your own. Hence the dogs.
